Vulture catching in 2007

Following on from the successes of 2005 and 2006, another vulture nestling catching mission was undertaken in February and March 2007. Staff from BNHS captured 13 white-backed vulture nestlings in North Bengal, while other BNHS staff with support from Richard Cuthbert (RSPB), Tim Corballis (New Zealand climbing volunteer) captured 17 long-billed vulture and 6 white-backed chicks from the Gandhi Sagar Range and from Ramnagar near Satna, Madhya Pradesh. The usual difficulties of heat, steep cliffs and tall trees were met, as well as an angry swarm of bees. All nestlings were weighed, ringed and physically examined at capture, and were all successfully transported by air to the project's second breeding centre at Raja Bhat Khawa, Buxa Tiger Reserve, West Bengal. We would like to thank the Chief Wildlife Wardens of Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal for permissions to capture and transport nestlings to the centre, and in addition the State Forestry Department's staff for assisting and helping with the catching operations.
