The Rufford Foundation comes to the rescue again
The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation has given a huge boost to the vulture recovery programme. The Foundation, which provided £40,000 towards the establishment of the Pinjore centre in 2004/05, has now followed up with a grant of £50,000 towards the centres in West Bengal and Assam states.
At Buxa, Rufford's support is vital in helping us complete the infrastructure required. When the centre is at full capacity (around 150 birds), the grant will help to cover costs of food, staff and other running costs. At present, Buxa has one colony aviary and five holding/quarantine aviaries, so the urgency here is to fully develop the centre to accommodate these and further birds as soon as possible. The centre in Assam is at a much earlier stage of development, and Rufford's support will make a tremendous difference to what we are able to achieve in the effort to prevent the vultures from dying out completely.
Our sincere thanks are due to the trustees and staff of the Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation for this vital intervention to prevent the extinction of these species.
