Banning diclofenac
Since the discovery of the role of diclofenac as the main, if not the only, cause of the vulture declines in Asia, extensive work has been initiated to ban the veterinary use of diclofenac formulations. Led by the advocacy programme of the Bombay Natural History Society (see the Advocacy Programme link on the left) and parallel work in Pakistan and India. As a consequence of high level pressure and research demonstrating that there was a vulture safe alternative drug to replace diclofenac, the governments of India, Nepal and Pakistan announced a ban on the production of veterinary formulations of diclofenac in 2006. This marks a notable and rapid conservation success to achieve this ban, coming just 2 years after the discovery and publication of the role of diclofenac in 2004. Further efforts to tighten the laws governing the sale and use of veterinary diclofenac have been in India, with ongoing efforts across the region.
